α-mangostin is a xanthone compound with multiple biological activities from the peel of mangosteen. It has outstanding performance in pharmacological activity research on anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, antibacterial and neuroprotective effects. In order to explore the agricultural bactericidal activity of α-mangosteen, researchers from the Institute of Environment and Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences and other units conducted a preliminary indoor antibacterial activity screening of 10 plant pathogenic bacteria, and selected pathogenic bacteria with better inhibitory effects. Indoor virulence and potted plant control tests were conducted using the plate colony method.

The results show that α-mangostin has the strongest antibacterial activity against rice bacterial blight and melon bacterial fruit spot. Its EC50 is 35.93 and 27.58 mg/L respectively. It also has strong antibacterial activity against melon bacterial fruit spot. The protective and therapeutic effects, among which the protective effect is better than the therapeutic effect. Therefore, it is believed that α-mangostin has a good inhibitory effect on plant pathogenic bacteria and has great research potential in agricultural antibacterial applications.

It has also been reported that α-mangostin has a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of mango anthracnose and the synthesis of ergosterol.
